Head of the Horse of Selene's Chariot. East Pediment. 438-432 B.C. British Museum, London.
Selene is Greek for Moon, referring to the story of the East Pediment. This is one of the horses which pulled the Moon across the sky all night and now, exhausted, is pulling the Moon into the sea. This symbolism give the time of Athena Parthenos's birth--dawn.
